Lots of lovely green canvas

20111114-101424.jpg

We headed up to an MOD tender sale recently and purchased 6 lots of equipment. Amongst the lots were 4 crates of top quality heavy duty canvas tents and shelters. These are earmarked for making dining/cooking shelters. We will be making wooden frames for them to give them a nice rustic feel and recycle them into a new life in events. The colour of the canvas ideally blends with the UK’s countryside.

Eventually we hope to recycle some into yurt and geo-dome canvas covers.

New Vintage Tent Blog

Vintage seems to be a buzz word for a buzzing scene at the moment in the UK. It may just be sexing up charity shops, jumble sales and generally using old stuff as long as you can, but hey, so what. Recycling and repairing stuff to keep it in good order is good house keeping. Something the generations that went through both world wars knew something about.

Over The Moon is proud to be preserving these traditions with our store full of wooden ladders, imperial gauge tools, grandad’s chisels, plains, drills et al. Pride of place of course is our 20 sections of military marquee, all packed away and stored lovingly to appear at weddings and festivals up and down the land.

We’ve launched a new blog, Vintage Tents, to cover more vintage related articles as well as stuff on the tents. And if you’d like to hire our Vintage Tents read more here

Yurts, a step on from Tipis.

The Welsh Tourist board has been using an idyllic image of a yurt on a welsh beach.

Yurts, like tipis, are tents from an earlier time in man’s evolution of shelter. Yurts though have an advantage over the tipi for the modern family holiday. They are more spacious with better standing room across the tents whole floorspace. And the tipis best feature, it’s spiral spread of poles are best viewed and not covered with a rain catcher, which can work against people wanting dry tents. Yurts features are always viewed with no draughts and a curvasceous wood beamed roof.

Over The Moon will be offering a larger range of hard wood hand crafted yurts for hire & sale in 2011. We will be updating the yurt pages soon with the product specs.

GeoDome Research

We have been hankering to add a new style of tent to our wide range and a Geodesic Dome is top of the list.  We came across these sites recently detailing information on how to build your own.

Our plan is to build one with a diamater of about 5m/18ft.  Using a solid wooden construction and a canvas roof.  We have learnt quite a bit on the maths involved, hadn’t realised the variety of shapes and number of faces that can be used . We will keep you posted if this tent makes it out for the 2011 season.

The domes cut a contemporary style with their polygon shapes familiar from the Eden Centre and Disney World’s Epcot centre.

Tents For Films website launched

Over The Moon Tents in collaboration with Classic Canvas have launched a website that showcases the tents we have provided to the film and television industry.  www.TentsForFilms.com has a gallery of photos showing a variety of our tents out on film location and in studios.  In future as more projects are undertaken we will be using this site to exclusively provide information relating to tents being used as props.
